Software engineer resume example
Engineering managers skim for languages, systems you have built, scale, and impact. A plain one-column layout with specific, measurable bullets beats any clever design.
Skills to include
Hard skills
- Languages (e.g. Go, Python, Java, TypeScript)
- Databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis)
- Cloud (AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Containers (Docker, Kubernetes)
- CI/CD and testing
- System design
Soft skills
- Clear technical writing
- Code review
- Mentoring
- Owning incidents
How to write it
- Give scale: requests, users, data volume, latency.
- Show cost, reliability or speed improvements with numbers.
- Order the skills line by strength, and only list what you would be happy to be quizzed on.
Example bullet points
- Designed a Go service that prices 2M shipments a day with p99 latency under 80 ms
- Cut monthly AWS spend by $18K by moving batch jobs to spot instances and fixing N+1 queries
- Led migration from a monolith endpoint to event-driven workers using Kafka
- Mentor 2 junior engineers and run the team's code review guidelines
- Built REST and GraphQL APIs in Python (FastAPI) for a mobile app with 150K users
- Added integration tests that raised coverage from 41% to 78% and halved production incidents
In the builder, the "Sharpen these bullets" button rewrites your own lines in this style without inventing facts.
Questions
Should a software engineer resume be one page?
One page for under about 8 years of experience. Beyond that, two pages is fine if every line earns its place.
Do I need a GitHub link?
It helps, especially early in your career, but only if it shows real, readable work.
