One-page resume: how to fit it on one page

A one-page resume is the norm for students and anyone with under about ten years of experience. When yours runs a few lines over, fix it in this order: spacing first, then wording, then content, and change the font size last.

Quickest fix: paste or type your resume into the builder, go to "Fit & score" and press Flex-fit to 1 page. It tightens section spacing, line spacing, margins and finally font size in small steps, and stops at readable limits.

Watch a resume get fitted

This sample resume runs past page one. Step through the squeeze order and watch the red page-break line.

  1. Section spacing 120% → 80%
Air between blocks goes first; nobody misses it.
  2. Line spacing 1.40 → 1.15
Still comfortably above the 1.0 of solid-set type.
  3. Margins 1.00 → 0.60 in
Printers handle half an inch; the page still looks framed.
  4. Font size 12 → 11 pt
Last, and in half-point steps, because it is the one a reader notices.

How to fit a resume on one page: 10 fixes, least painful first

  1. Hunt for widows. A bullet whose last line holds one or two words costs a full line. Trim a word or two and it snaps back. This alone often saves 3–5 lines.
  2. Tighten section spacing. Space between sections can drop to 8 pt without looking cramped.
  3. Reduce line spacing to 1.1–1.15 if it is higher.
  4. Margins to 0.6–0.75 in, top and bottom first (see what margins buy).
  5. Move contact details onto one line, or beside your name as in the One-Page template.
  6. Merge small sections. Certifications and Skills, or Awards and Education.
  7. Cap bullets: 4–6 for your current role, 2–3 for older ones, one line for anything over 10–15 years ago.
  8. Delete the objective if you also have a summary, and "References available on request" always.
  9. Switch to a more compact font, e.g. Calibri or Garamond instead of Arial (compare them).
  10. Only then, drop half a point of font size, never below 10 pt (why).

When two pages is the right answer

If you have 10+ years of relevant experience, a publication or project list, or licences and clinical rotations to show, a two-page resume is normal. The rule is: fill the second page at least halfway. A resume that spills five lines onto page two looks like a fitting mistake, not like experience.

Does an ATS care about length?

No. Applicant tracking systems parse the text regardless of page count. The one-page convention is for the human who skims your resume after the ATS: studies of recruiter eye movement (such as Ladders' widely cited eye-tracking research) found initial skims lasting only seconds, which rewards a dense, well-ordered single page.

Questions

Should my resume be one page?

Yes if you are a student, recent graduate or have under about 10 years of experience. Senior professionals, academics and clinicians often need two.

How do I make my resume fit on one page without making the font tiny?

Fix widowed lines, tighten spacing and margins, merge small sections and cut older bullets first. Font size is the last lever and should stay at 10 pt or above.

Is a one-page resume better?

For early-career candidates, yes: it forces prioritisation and is quick to skim. It is not better if you have to cut genuinely relevant experience to get there.
